Crawl Space Repair Photo Album: Stephens City VA Crawl Space Improvement

This Stephens City VA home had some problems in the crawl space. The layer of black plastic covering the floor and walls was not serving any real purpose and was allowing moisture to collect, leading to mildew and mold collecting in the insulation. The open vents were allowing outside air to come in along with allergens and dust. This all lead to a musty smell and cold floors in the rooms above. Our Home Performance Sales Pro Eric went out to visit with the homeowner and identified a full service that would solve all of these problems. Our production team went and installed a new sump pump, Sedona dehumidifier, Terra Block matting to cover the dirt floors and then Clean Space material to cover everything including the walls and pillars of the crawl space after they were insulated. A new crawl space door was installed and all of the open vents were sealed up.

The dirty old insulation shows how dirt and allergens had been able to come into the crawl space from the open vents. The insulation acted like a filter and collected it all, turning it from bright pink to dark.

Traditional Crawl Space Protection

This style of crawl space covering does not always work. It can trap moisture below it rather than prevent it. That moisture can build up and help to promote mildew and musty odors.

This black plastic and all of the old insulation would be removed in order to upgrade the space with new and more effective materials.

Terra Block Matting

After removing the old black plastic material covering the floors, this Terra Block matting was installed to cover the dirt floors and still allow air to pass below.

Clean Space Installation

After covering the dirt floors with Terra Block, this Clean Space layer was installed over top and on the walls of the crawl space.

Old insulation removed and none was needed to replace it because the walls and rim joist were filled with spray foam. This turned the crawl space into a controlled space with cleaner air and usable space.
