Photo Album: Reston VA Crawl Space Insulation and Duct Maintenance

During an annual maintenance check up for previous services we had performed on this Reston VA home, our Service Technician Brent was asked by the homeowners to see if he could find anything in their crawl space that might explain why their home comfort had been so poor over the last few months. He quickly identified the issue. Several duct connections in the crawl space were loose or had come disconnected. This was leaking conditioned are made by the HVAC system into the crawl space which was not insulated or sealed so uncontrolled out side air was also coming into the space. This created condensation and moisture along with humid air making its way into the home and living spaces above. We identified a solution for all of the problems in the crawl space and our production crew was scheduled to return a few weeks later. The production team helped connect the HVAC ducts correctly, cleaned up old debris in the crawls space and removed the old existing insulation which had been falling from the ceiling of the crawl space. Our production team then sealed up the vents of the crawl space and applied spray foam insulation to all of the walls in the space. This closed off the ability for outside air to come in and help make the crawl space a controlled environment. This would all help to improve the comfort of the rooms above for the home owners, improve the air quality in the home and reduce the energy costs for the home.

This duct was not connected to anything so it was pumping conditioned air int the crawl space.

Duct Work Repair Needed

This duct was only partially covered and was therefore improperly insulated. Our production crew would later solve this problem by insulating the walls of the crawl space, eliminating the need to cover the ducts at all.

Spray Foam Insulation

This insulation runs from the rim joists all the way down to the surface or the crawl space. This helps to not only insulate the crawl space but seal it up so that unwanted and uncontrolled outside air cannot come in.

This HVAC ducts was properly reset in the rafters once the old insulation was removed. Spray Foam on the walls all around the crawl space rendered the need for any other insulation needless.
