Photo Album: Vienna Virginia Basement Wall Insulation and Air Sealing

This home in Vienna Virginia had a basement that was too cold. The basement was unfinished which presented a great opportunity to use materials that would not only week, but would last and allow for finishing to happen in the future if the homeowner wanted. Spray foam was used to insulate the external walls as well as filling in the rim joists of the home. Basement to Beautiful insulation panels were used for the rest of the walls. This would all help to keep the space better controlled but would also prevent any external air from entering the space. An added benefit would be the sound dampening provided by having the walls covered.

Ineffective Insulation

With squares of insulation stuffed in the rim joists of this home, the real need was air sealing. Preventing entry of external air and the loss of conditioned air would help improve the air quality in the basement and the rest of the home.

The frame work of the walls was filled with several inches of spray foam insulation. This will help keep outside temperatures from impacting how it feels inside of the home.
