Fixing the Crawl Space to Improve Comfort
Challenge
A family living in Alexandria, VA was experiencing humidity and comfort problems in the rooms above their crawl space. There were noticeable musty odors in the rooms above the crawl, too. Upon inspection, it was apparent that the crawl space needed a vapor barrier, and there was likely mold growth based on the musty smell. The crawl space had a dirt floor and had exterior access, meaning it was basically exposed to the elements and to pests or critters.
Solution
First, we removed and disposed of the current insulation in the crawl. As you can imagine, it was badly damaged. Our team also removed the existing plastic vapor barrier that was all but destroyed. We laid down drainage matting and covered it TerraBlock insulation to condition the crawl space. On top of those products, we installed our CleanSpace encapsulation system. In addition to repairing these parts of the crawl space, we installed a new sump pump and drainage system, as well as a Sedona dehumidifier to keep conditions dry in all weather and all seasons.
