Sump Pump Service and Maintenance Matters

A properly functioning sump pump can be the silent hero that a home needs when there is unwanted water making its way into a crawl space or basement. It is an important component that you never know exactly when you will need, but can lead to serious problems if it doesn't do its job. It is often too late once a homeowner discovers that their sump pump has stopped working. These photos show what can happen when a sump pump is ignored for too long. Standing water in the well has the potential to overflow and flood this crawl space.

Solution

Regular service and maintenance can ensure that a sump pump is not only working now, but will be in good shape to work when you have that unexpected water in your home. An annual service check in should include cleaning, removal and reinstallation and then testing of the sump pumps functionality. The cost of a service check is minimal compared to the cost of repairing water damage or mold removal.

This sump pump is properly placed in the lowest spot of the crawl space and will successfully collect water when present, with the intent to discharge out of the crawl space.

After opening the top of the sump pump well it was clear that this pump had been neglected.

Looking at this pump you can see it is covered in sediment which has locked up its moving parts which will keep it from triggering into the on position when water raises above the level of concern.
